As more and more closed, small size and insulation type of new equipment applied practically in the power system, the traditional means of ears and the visual have been proved difficult to achieve detecting their operating status and determining correctly.The same time as conventional detection methods needed to stop running the equipment or even disintegrate, which may cause a greater impact on the normal operation of power systems and power supply, so we need to explore the use of new means of detecting the states of equipments for power system efficiently and correctly. As the infrared thermal imaging technology can get information from the operational status of electrical equipment accurately, real-time and fast in the condition of non-contact, no power, no collapse, no sampling, and it also has advantages of high resolution, monitoring a wide range of image intuitive and being free from electromagnetic interference, just for these significant advantages it has been a new mean of detection for power system. Based on infrared thermal image, the paper explores calculation of temperature in the fault area of equipment for power system and recognition technology for the critical devices.This paper outlined the background and significance of infrared diagnostic technology applied in power system, and detailed account of developing status of infrared technology in home and abroad. The detection principles of application of infrared technology and basic rules of infrared radiation were reviewed, and the relevant knowledge about infrared camera applied also have been described, including the basic principles of infrared imaging system, performance indicators and characteristics, its detection in the range of the power system and fault diagnosis methods. Besides, a brief introduction of infrared digital image was also given. Aim to solve the problem in the paper, that is completing temperature detecting for the failure equipment in the power system through the infrared imaging get from infrared thermal images, the paper gave the corresponding infrared image processing, such as binarization, median filtering, canny edge detection and then through the Hough transform find the target lines to analyze whether the fault point is located in the line wires or the drainage board, as well as completed temperature calculation by and relations between gray image and temperature. In VC 6.0 with OpenCV library, the operations and algorithms above were achieved through the software, and corresponding man-machine interface was also designed; the software can automatically handle most images to simplify the manual operation, which greatly improves the processing speed, and efficiency of the actual work, so it has a good value of use in practical work.
