Cartoon, toy and film industry are major parts of cultural and creative industry, and they are growing rapidly in recent years. As the level of development promoted, the weakness of creative design becomes the major bottleneck. Since three dimensional modeling methods could create 3D models which are more expressive, it is more important in these days. But the 3D modeling softwares are too complicated for most designers who are used to draw their ideas with pencils. In order to narrow this gap, we introduce a new 3D modeling method. The method is based on feature gene which will be modified by users' sketch, and then the template model is transformed according to the modified feature gene.In Chapter 1, the developments of cartoon, toy and film industry are introduced with the description of the status of their design method. The researches in the related field are given for references. Finally the full research ideas are given and the main contents are summarized. In Chapter 2, the definition, extraction and optimization are introduced. First the formal developments of line drawings are introduced and the definition is given based on it. Then the extraction of space domain is presented. Finally, the feature gene is optimized by vectorization and fitting. In Chapter 3, sketch semantics, sketch driven feature gene deformation and projection method are discussed. First, the sketch semantics are constructed according to the analysis of designers' sketches, and the main processes are presented. Second, the feature gene deformation method is introduced base on active contour model. Third, feature gene projection method is introduced. In Chapter 4, mesh deformation methods are presented. The Laplace deformation method is introduced briefly, then mesh deformation methods are raised according to their corresponded sketch semantics and feature gene.In Chapter 5, the three dimensional modeling system is introduced. And some examples are illustrated. In Chapter 6, the research results of this subject are summarized, and the future research direction is pointed out.
