Sectional anatomical structure, as the morphological basis of CT, MRI, Ultrasound and other diagnostic medical imaging, offers a contrast of anatomical structure with the gray images acquired by the imaging devices. Demand for the development of color sectional anatomy is great with the rapid growth of medical imaging technology. Rats, the commonest animals used in biology and medicine, have been widely utilized in life science research and experimental teaching. It is necessary to build a sectional anatomical color atlas due to the absent sectional anatomical atlas about rat at home. This paper details the reconstruction of coronal and sagittal sectional images, and the uniformization of the reconstructed images using the least squares fitting to obtain three-dimensional uniform sectional images. Sectional images pre-processes, including color mode conversion and resolution adjustment, etc, are performed to meet the printing and publishing. Secondly, the paper builds a standard in atlas label on the basis of MeSH ontology because of commonality and uniqueness in the label, and studies the anatomical structure labeling methods based on color, shape and location of the structures. Finally, the paper designs and implements a Flash-based interactive electronic atlas in order to compensate for the shortcomings of non-interactive printed atlas. This electronic atlas software can demonstrate the fine anatomical structure through page turning, zooming, dragging and other interactive features, which will greatly improve beginning students to master sectional anatomy of the rat.The color images of SD sectional anatomical atlas are captured from the same rat. Life science teachers and students will better master rat's structures'morphological changes and positional concepts during the sections on the basis of systematic anatomy and regional anatomy, which supplies a good morphological foundation on studying physiology, disease pharmacology and genetics.
