Taking Nanyang Siang Pau as an example, this thesis is designed to make acontent analysis on the news coverage about the issues of Chinese community inMalaysia, mainland China and the region of Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan inoverseas Chinese media, thus to investigate the key role overseas Chinese media playin the construction and preservation of ethnic identity of overseas Chinese.By applying the quantitative and qualitative approaches, this studymacroscopically focuses on the overall situation of news reports about Chinesecommunities occurred in Nanyang Siang Pau,then it continues to analyze these newscoverage from many ethnic identity elements including Chinese politics, Chineseculture, Chinese language education, Chinese societies and China's clout, in order toexplore its effect on the ethnic identity of Chinese Malaysians.From this thesis, it is shown that Nanyang Siang Pau has established a relativelyobjective viewpoint on overseas Chinese news report. It puts great emphasis onChinese politics, Chinese culture, Chinese language education, Chinese societies andChina's clout, which plays an irreplaceable part in inspiring enthusiasm forparticipation in the administration and discussion of state affairs among local Chinese,improving their Chinese proficiency, inheriting traditional Chinese culture,maintaining their interests and enhancing the identity of Chinese ethnic groups.Finally, this study concludes that Nanyang Siang Pau still has many deficienciesin showing the complete picture of overseas Chinese. For instance, news report onethnic group exchanges is in serious shortage, which is bad for constructingharmonious ethnic group relationships and safeguarding lawful rights and interests oflocal Chinese.
