With the rapid development of the network technology and multimedia technology, video on demand services are more and more widely used, which have become have the important part of information services. On the other hand, embedded technology continues to progress, but also according to individual needs makes it on mobile devices anywhere, anytime video on demand programming.The author had been designed and implemented the handheld mobile on demand system based on wifi campus network, based on the combination of embedded, streaming media and wireless LAN communication technologies, based on the research of related streaming media technology which used in video on demand.This paper briefly described the MPEG-4 and RTP/RTCP, RTSP and other related technologies, and focused on the overall design of the system, including: system requirements analysis, functional design, software system design and development platform for client selection, etc.. Then, it carried out a detailed design and implementation of function of the client-side, including:the construction of an integrated development environment, system architecture and software design processes of the client, client-side functionality Module design and implementation, and client-side user interface design. Meanwhile, the optimization and porting of the MPlayer and the porting of CF-based wifi network driver and other key technologies were studied. Finally, building streaming media server, on the system functionality and performance were tested, and gives the test results, analysis of the design deficiencies and areas for improvement and future work is prospected.
