The space solar radiation which bears the character of immense energy density and being unaffected by the climate day and night can be used to pump solid laser directly or indirectly. In the process of indirectly pumping, the solar energy is converted into electric current which is complicated and less efficient. With the solar-pumped Nd:YAG laser, the process of energy conversion can be omitted,which can increase the efficiency of light to light conversion and simplify the structure and operation of the laser. Therefore it is of great importance to output laser by solar-pumped Nd:YAG laser.The paper firstly explained the history and application prospect of solar-pumped Nd:YAG laser. The features of space solar radiation and the characteristics of the Nd:YAG laser crystal are introduced afterwards. The theoretical foundation is set up through establishing the discrete models of solar spectra which analyzed the matching degree of solar spectra and absorption of optical spectrum by the Nd:YAGlaser crystal.Based on the four-level rate equation, the theoretical model of solar-pumped Nd:YAG laser was established on which the performance parameter of the laser was calculated and compared to determine the size of crystal appropriated to the experiment. The paper also put forward the conical condenser chamber fit for the whole system and proved its rationality through donut-shaped mask. Combined with calculation and analysis, the overall design of the experiment and experiment devices were finished. Finally by finite-element method, the calorific effect which is produced by laser crystal working in the conical condenser chamber was analyzed.
