Objective To investigate the early and medium term result of unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) versus totle knee arthroplasty (TKA) for the treatment of isolated compartmental osteoarthritis of knee. Methods The UKA group contained 10 patients (10 knees) and 10 patients were in TKA group (12 knees). All the patients accepted arthroplasty by the same operator. All the patinets evaluation focused on the blood loss and the length of hospital stay. Then, compared with the HSS knee score and the maximum flexion of knee in 3-6 month and the last follow-up. All the patients were well followed-up. The UKA group were followed up for 3years-4.2 years, average 3.62 years and theTKA group were followed up for 3-4.2years,average 3.72 years.Result All the results were compared and analyzed. The effects of both two groups appeared excellent. There were no infection and component loosening.HSS knee score in two groups are no statistics differences (UKA:55.9±1.9; TKA:56±2.1,P>0.1). Compared with the TKA group, the UKA had less blood loss (UKA:170±25.8ml; TKA:325ml,P< 0.001) and less hospital days after operation (UKA:8d;TKA:14d). HSS knee score is better in UKA group than in TKA group after 3-6 month (UKA:78±2.6; TKA:68±3.9,P<0.001); Maximum flexion of knee is better in UKA group too(UKA:112±4.1°; TKA组:94±6.7°,P<0.001).However,there is no differences between these two groups after the end of research(HSS, UKA:85±3.6; TKA:84±2.4,P>0.1. Maximum flexion of knee, UKA:120±6.2°, TKA:113±7.8°,P>0.1).HSS knee score improved significantly in both two groups to the end research:UKA group dwas promoted from 55.9±1.9 to 85.0±3.6 and TKA group from 56±2.1 to 84.0±2.4.Conclusions UKA for the treatment of isolated compartmental osteoarthritis of knee has less wound, less blood loss and less length of hospital stay. UKA has better effect in early term than TKA, and the effect is as well as TKA in 3-4 year followed-up.
