Antimicrobial resistance problem caused by antimicrobial agents used in the course of treatment of human infectious diseases, has attracted world-wide consensus and importance. But people have payed less attention to abuse of antimicrobial agents in edible animal and been lack of knowledge of the consequences. Rapid and dynamic global events have placed even more importance on the essential role of antimicrobial susceptibility testing of bacteria isolated from animals. For example, judicious use guidelines (consensus directions for the appropriate use of antimicrobial agents in animals) have been developed worldwide by veterinary, industry, and public health organizations for both food and companion animals, that emphasize the critical need for obtaining susceptibility data using standardized test methods and interpretive criteria. As the main measures of control of drug resistance, the establishment of regional, national and international food animal antibiotic resistance surveillance systems have become an inevitable trend. By monitoring the pathogens infection in different animals in different regions and prevalence of bacterial resistance dynamics in Jiangsu Province in 2007~2008, we can analyse the trends and drug resistance spectrum, and to guide the rational use of antibiotics in farms. It also can provide the basis for effectively deal with the problems of bacteria resistance. If the susceptibility of a bacterial pathogen to antimicrobial agents cannot be predicted based on the identity of the organism alone, in vitro antimicrobial susceptibility testing of the organism isolated from the disease processes in animals is indicated. Susceptibility testing is particularly necessary in those situations where the etiologic agent belongs to a bacterial species for which resistance to commomly used antimicrobial agents has been documented, or could arise. In this study, the Escherechia coli (E.coli) obtained from the animals on breeding farm in Jiangsu Province from year 2007 to 2008 was isolated, cultivated and identified by biochemistry response; and the susceptibility to 24 antibacterials was determined by broth microdilution test recommended by NCCLS (National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards). These strains were in different degrees of resistance to these 24 antibacterials, and the drug resistance was severe to penicillins, tetracyclines, chloramphenicols, sulfanilamide and rifampicin. That has the guidance significance for clinical medication. The foreign profile of antimicrobial resistance monitoring and surveillance program in animal, and the purpose of resistance monitoring and surveillance program were described. A variety of factors to be considered for resistance monitoring and surveillance program were introduced and discussed, including the animal species, food products, sampling strategies, specimens collecting, bacterial species, antimicrobials, standardized susceptibility testing, quality control, database design and recording, report and analysis of result. Suggestion was pointed out about antimicrobial resistance monitoring and surveillance program in the future.
