| Space environment mutation technology and spontaneous variation, combing with conventional breeding method, are widely used in corn breeding to develop elite inbred lines and produce hybrid combination. Application of mutation breeding has produced very good effect in grain crop, vegetables, and flowers breeding for a long time. Beside studies on the key technologies of space environment mutation on Zea mays, some continuous experiments on selection, identification, and combination matching of space-environment-mutagenesis material were made from 2003 to 2009. In the present paper, the breeding histories and the adaptability of a new variety Shaandan 22 in Zea may are reported. The results obtained are as following:1. Using space mutagenesis combing with conventional breeding method, an excellent inbred lines m3021 was developed, which was characterized as compact plant architecture, good agronomical traits, strong resistance to biotic and aboitic stress, higher combing ability, and high yielding ability per se.2. A hybrid variety Shaandan 22, produced by a cross between inbred lined m3021 and m340x, yielded 9943kg/hm2 averagely in spring-sowing corn trails of Shaanxi province, increasing 8.33 per cent compared to the contrast variety. In the production test, Shaandan 22 had an average yield of 9553kg/hm2, 9.7% higher than the contrast. Shaandan 22 was characterized by high seed yield, wide adaptability, good seed quality, and high resistance to epidemic diseases (such as head smut, ear rot, southern and northern leaf blight, and stalk rotc).3. The results of Shaanxi province's multi-location trails of spring-sowing regional trails in 2008 and 2009 were analyzed using the parameters including yield, percentage of yield increase, coefficient of variation, and high-stability coefficient (HSC) as the measurements respectively. Shaandan 22 showed higher yielding ability (average 9943kg/hm2 in the two years), smaller coefficient of variation (11.74â„…and 22.8% in 2008 and 2009, respectively),and higher HSC (87.95â„…, 74.03%). Its yield ranked the fourth in all the varieties included both in 2008 and 2009'trails. This was accordance with the results of the 2009's production demonstration in Shaanxi province. It approved by the Shaanxi Crop Variety Approval Committee to be extend at large scale in appropriate area. The results obtained in this paper will be useful for development of new variety and marketing promotion of Shaandan 22 in large scale. |
