Because of the great damage of earthquake, doing research on mitigation of structures is very important. Due to the excellent performance of structural vibration controls on earthquake mitigation, it has great prospects by using them in buildings. Of the structural vibration controls, the metallic damper is widest used in structural projects for its simplicity and economy. Based on the problems of mitigation controls, the low yield steel damper's tests and analysis of mitigation controls are carried out. The contents and results are as follows:(1) A new U-shape low yield steel damper is proposed. According to working principle and mechanical behaviors of the damper, mechanical formulas for damper component, series dampers and parallel dampers are established. The displacement formulas of series dampers are related to the number of dampers, while the capacity formulas are irrelevant with the number. However the situations of parallel dampers are opposite. By using ANSYS, the correctness of the formulas of the damper component is proved.(2) By using ANSYS and controlling the parameters like geometric sizes and material properties, the U-shape damper component is researched. The tendencies of mechanical properties are obtained by the study of the results. The results also provide designing advice of U-shape damper.(3) A test model of U-shape damper component is processed. And the Mechanical tests and simulation analysis of this size of damper also have been done. The ability of energy dissipation of the very damper component is gotten by standard tests and fatigue tests:the hysteresis loops are full, and the effective damping ratio is 0.2. Comparing the tests results and numerical simulation results, they are consistent.(4) Add the U-shape dampers to a steel frame structure with 8 floors, and use ANSYS to analyze the seismic response under the earthquake. The results show that the horizontal displacements of the structure decrease about 70% in uncommon earthquake which means outstanding performance on earthquake mitigation for the dampers.
