In construction engineering, the building structure of cement concrete will crack due to the impact of design, construction, environment and regular use. The presence of cracks not only affects the appearance of buildings, but also directly affects their normal use and durability. When the width of cracks overruns their limit value, they may endanger the safety of the building and cause harms and losses to the society. Therefore, we must pay attention to the problem of concrete cracks. According to the crack's actual situation, we should actively take appropriate remedial measures to control its harm within the allowed range.In this paper, we analyze and study the cracks of the cement concrete using the digital image processing techniques, which is very sophisticated in current days. First of all, we collect the cracks'image through the image acquisition components (such as DC cameras, Digital camcorders and etc). Generally, the visible crack in the project is too long to display in one picture. So we use sub-collection methods to capture the crack images. The collected crack image then is turned into digital signal and transmitted to a computer. The computer is used to complete the Image data's storage management, image processing, the crack's max width measurement and the system's maintenance.Finally, the crack image and the result are displayed through the image output device. Image processing and the crack's width measurement are the cores of the concrete crack's width detection system. Image processing includes crack image intensity, gray enhancement, image filtering, image binary and the crack edge determination. In the paper, we finally find a set of image processing algorithms for the crack's processing by various classical analysis and comparison, which can effectively pick up the edge of crack from the whole image. Also, we propose two methods for the crack's width measurement: the level left and right edge points method and the minimum distance method. Their calculation accuracy is statistically analyzed through experiment.Finally, based on the Microsoft's new generation of programming environment Visual Studio.Net, according to the Object-oriented programming design, we develop the concrete crack's width detection system using C# programming language. The system's interface haves reasonable design, beautiful appearance and strong human-computer interaction. The system implements processing automation, solves the traditional manual measurement inefficiency, subjectivity and uncertainty and plays the digital image processing technology advantage.
