Electro-absorption modulator (EAM) is the most critical devices of modern optical communication transmission systems, it is a focus in all-optical network. EAM is also an important optical integrated device due to small, compact size, high-speed, low chirp, easy to be integrated and strong nonlinear properties. With the development of fiber communications technology and modern photonics technology, the performance of EAM are well been studied. The wavelength-conversion based EAM is a research hotspot in recent years because of the advantages of simple,low drive-voltage requirement, and can overcome dispersion of the light pulses in long-distance transmission.The characteristics of the EAM are first analyzed, the output characteristics of electro-absorption modulator in different conditions have been simulated, factors affect the output characteristics including the input incident wave length and the drive voltage were analyzed.Another part of the paper is studying the wavelength conversion based on EAM in the theory. Consider the different method of wavelength conversion technology in the current, the paper compared the advantages and disadvantages of wavelength conversion technology, the superiority of wavelength conversion based on EAM is proposed. The studying of wavelength conversion based on EAM in the theory is few, so the paper selected the appropriate carrier rate equations to calculate and simulate. The choice of initial conditions affect the transformation efficiency and the converted waveform, this paper discuss the effect of bias voltage and power of incident light on the wavelength conversion based EAM, calculated and simulated the carrier concentration graph at different bias voltage, the finally converted signal waveform through MATLAB simulation have been gotten, at the same time, the paper calculated the chirp of wavelength-conversion signal and the chirp graph at different bias voltage have been gotten; In addition, the paper also calculated and simulated the carrier concentration graph at different power, the finally converted signal waveform through MATLAB simulation have been gotten, the output result has been good. In the last part, this paper analyzed and summarized the results of wavelength conversion at different bias voltage and different power of incident light.The studying of wavelength conversion based on EAM is few, especially in the theoretical research, so the results of this paper will promote the theoretical studying of EAM and give some help for wavelength conversion based EAM in experimental and theoretical studies in the future.
