E-mail has become an important channel for the spreading of network viruses. A virus hidden in an e-mail usually spreads with the email, activates at certain conditions, does damages and spreads itself, and it occupies computer resources, damages functions of a computer, or even results in loss of important data, confidential information being stealed, and network being jammed, and it brings considerable losse to our economy. E-mail virus poses a threat to computer systems and network security, therefore the safety of email system becomes an important problem, and effective safety defense against email virus is significant to the safety use of e-mail system and network safety, and a major goal of this paper is to study the technology of e-mail anti-virus gateway.In this paper the theory of email system and the course of email protocol are analyzed, and the structure and transferring mechanism of email are introduced, also the basic theory of email virus is desribed, and the theory and features of present e-mail anti-virus technology are analyzed. Then an e-mail anti-virus gateway system is designed, and its functional requirements are analyzed, the processing course and overall framework are designed with the modules divided, as well as the security policies for the filter of e-mail virus are designed.Then the e-mail protocol and data analyzing module is analyzed, and its functional structure is designed, also the processing course and sub-module division are presented, an abstract and unified structure of protocol analyzing is designed, considering the specific command and status code of each email protocol. The study of e-mail structures leads to the analysis of dividing method of e-mail structure. After that the email virus filtering module is designed in detail, and the course and key scanning algorithm of anti-virus engine are designed with emphasis, as well as the design of virus library, also some implementation methods of some sub functions are given. Finally the testing methods are proposed, and the system is tested functionally and its performance is tested, also the data is analyzed and summarized.
