With the increasing flow of peasant workers into Chinese cities,relevant problems turn up as constant obsession for them. Now, it has alreadybecome a big concern of the government bodies to serve the interests ofthe peasant workers. With the peasant workers becoming the major force,their social security problem has turned a major problem. The conflictsbetween city residents and the peasant workers have drawn remarkableattention from academics and the press. Reducing conflict and furtheringsocial integration will make a large step toward a harmonious society.Media serve as the mouthpiece of the Party and the Government. Media,especially the local newspapers, should engage themselves in issues ofpeasant workers actively. Local newspapers play an important role incaring about the peasant workers, and maintaining social stability in theprocess of rural-urban. Although local newspapers have made great effortsand have significant achievements on the reporting of peasant workers, itis not without shortfalls. The ever-deepening research and structuralcritical analysis are still badly lacking and this paper is to put forwardsome recommendations for how to improve the reporting of peasant workers.The paper starts with a brief overview of the subject matter, reviewshow the peasant workers appears and enters the agenda of Chinese governmentand point out why it deserves special attention of the local newspapers.Then, on the basis of case study of three local newspapers in Nanjing,describes the strength and weakness in related news reporting by theanalyzing the contents of news. The third section describes the underline reasons for the weakness ofthe reporting and recommends some solutions in practice.Finally, I describes how to improvethe inter-action between the peasantworkers and the local newspapers, and some recommendations on peasantworks' integration into the social system to build a harmonious society.
