This article starts from the characteristics of mass media dealing with relevant news reports during the course of the anti-Japan protest demonstrations in April.2005, and then locates analytically that the role and function of the mass media in different periods. Lastly, it puts forwards an assumption of mass media functioning on the bases of the conclusions above. Conclusions in this article include mainly: during the protest demonstrations in April.2005, the mass media, with various roles originally, tended to be governmental. On the one hand, mass media transferred information actively in coordination with the government; on the other hand, they catered for the government consciously to conform to its potential willingness. So, mass media seems hard to have positively communicative effect during the period. Sentimentalism reflected in news- reports might deepen the "engraved image" of Japan in all Chinese minds, which stirred up the feeling of hatred. Meanwhile, mass media zipped their mouths facing the domestic demonstrations, which did not have instructive function in the end. In the last chapter, on the foundation of the conclusions, the article suggests as followings: to report the truth and lead public opinions; to report Japan objective and variously; to cool the repulsive feeling in Chinese minds and lead public to regard it rationally. In a word, on the basis of plentiful news collected and arranged, the article puts forward the reasonable assumption on communicative function of the mass media and opens a door for researching such collective behavior continuously.
