This thesis expounds the importance of mode determination and its particularity in high power microwave. The development and status quo of common mode determination methods are enunciated and compared. The theory and technical instrumentality of mode determination by radiation characteristics are discussed in detail. Also, the radiation fields are obtained efficiently form aperture fields using fast Fourier transformation and verified to be correct by analytic results. Based on this, the radiation characteristics of higher order modes and hybrid modes in an open-ended circular waveguide are studied. The basic physical figures and explanation are presented. The study shows that the radiation characteristics of hybrid modes are fairly perplexed especially in circular waveguide (which is popular in high power microwave) because of the uncertain polarization directions. However, the radiation fields will be well-regulated if some restricted conditions added. Considering the specific engineering matter, the mode determination could be achieved in some extent.
