Registration is a fundamental task in digital image Processing used to match two or more images, which are taken at different time, from different sensors or from different viewpoints. Registration is the foundation of many image processing and applications such as multi-spectral image fusion, the analysis of image series, objects recognition, objects change detection, image mosaic, and the effect of registration directly works on the following processing steps.This paper concerns the research on the registration of the multi-spectral images which are obtained using the CCD camcorder, especially on the realization and improvement of the image registration method based on mutual information, including:(1) Research on the image registration method based on mutual information. Mutual information registration method which is widely used in the medical image registration during recent years has been applied on the multi-spectral images which are obtained using the CCD camcorder in this paper, and the simplex optimizing method has been used to search the registering parameters. The results of the experiment prove the feasibility of the method and indicate the defect of this method: proper initial value is required by simplex method; otherwise the method will lead to misregistration.(2) Research on the improvement in the image registration method based on mutual information using image pyramid. The image pyramid is obtained by using the wavelet transform, and then we do the registering work at each level of the image pyramid. And the image grade method is applied at the coarsest level (the lowest resolution) of the image pyramid, while Mutual information registration method can be performed at the rest of levels with the result at the pervious level serving as the initial condition. The result of the experiment shows that the hybrid image registration method based on wavelet transformation and mutual information proposed in this paper can carry out an accurate, robust and completely automatic registering work of the multi-spectral images which are obtained using the CCD camcorder, and that it need no image segmentation or image preprocess, and that it can bring to success automatically without alternation with people.
