Investigation of optical waveguide sensors is very important in integrated optics domain. The characteristics of precise, quickness and portability of optical waveguide sensors make them gain wide military and medicinal applications. Among kinds of optical waveguides, anti-resonant reflecting optical waveguide is an appropriate choice to the optical waveguide sensors for its low loss, so investigation of it becomes significant.For the purpose of improving the sensitivity of optical waveguide sensors, this paper presents a novel periodic anti-resonant reflecting waveguide and researches the working principles, waveguide structures, sensitivity and design of waveguide sensors. The main contents as follows:1. The principles, structures and development of optical biochemical waveguide sensors, also their wide applications in military and medicine field are all introduced.2. The working principles, structures, characteristics of anti-resonant reflecting waveguide are investigated in this paper. The optical beam transfer matrix method is used to analyze the transfer manners and the distribution of waveguide modal field in detail. Through analyzing the transfer losses, the appreciate waveguide mode is selected as the working mode.3. Based on traditional anti-resonant reflecting optical waveguide, the sample which needs to be measured is made as the core of the waveguide sensor. As beams transmit mostly in the core of waveguide, also the changes of thickness and refractive index of the sample will quickly and sensitively affect the propagation constant, the information of sample can be obtained through monitoring the propagation constant.4. The periodic anti-resonant reflecting layers are presented. Through calculation and simulation, it is found that this kind of waveguide has excellent performances.5.
