With the development of information society and the explosive growth of Internet, the requirements of network capacity have increased dramatically, which are promoting the construction of broadband trunk network. Wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) is a promising approach that can exploit the enormous bandwidth of the optical fiber. A single fiber can be employed for multiple data streams simultaneously. All-optical networks employing the concept of WDM and wavelength routing are considered as the transport networks for the future. With the development of OXC and OADM, the optical transmission network based on DWDM is not confined to point-to-point transmission, which is extended to networking. As different services and applications at high layers, optical transmission network has to allocate resources intelligently. In optical WDM networks, a wavelength channel has transmission rate of over gigabits per second (e.g, OC-48, OC-192 or OC-768, etc). If links (fiber links) fail, a lot of connection streams would be dropped. So the protection designs are very important for the fault management in survivable WDM optical networks. Many research results have been used practically so far, which provides useful methods for network users and network operators. But these researches do not consider the users'requirements. For example, some users do not need protection, if network supplies protection, which means more money will be paid. And some users need protection, a part of them needs even higher protection. Network operators have to find the way to meet users'demands in this competitive market, and meanwhile operate network resources efficiently. So, to propose some algorithms to provide these services becomes many researchers'interests. This thesis discusses availability problems in WDM optical networks with dynamic network load. It includes network availability, connection availability and multicast availability. In chapter 2, we propose a new definition of network availability against the disadvantages of literatures, which is the provided availability value to connection requests when the best network performance is achieved. Network performance is...
