This paper is based on the research and development project "Distributed and Intelligent Virtual Reality Training System". High performance of 3D simulating scenes is required in this system. But the traditional scene simulation software such as Vega and Vtree have a lot of disadvantages. Their low efficiency and low performance on 3D scene restrict the whole training system. In order to solve this problem, we did a systemic research on graphics engine technique based on the latest GPU. Follows are the main work and innovations of the paper.1. In the application processing stage of the 3D graphics pipeline, we successfully implemented the culling algorithms by using BSP, so we can provide real-time performance on the rendering of large database scenes. And a new features of Shader model 3.0, instance technique is used to accelerate the rendering of thousands of objects with the same geometry structure, but with different positions, orientation, size and color. These strategies are innovative and valuable in the engineering.2. In the geometry processing stage of the 3D graphics pipeline, an deep research on terrain rendering and ocean wave simulating is done. A novel algorithm for the rendering of large database terrain based on adaptive mesh and vertex texture is presented in this paper. Compared to the traditional terrain methods, this method reduced the burden of the CPU and has more stabilized frame rate. In ocean wave simulation, we improved Jerry Tessendorf's FFT method and reduced the calculation of the ocean wave simulating by using a low frequency filer.3. In the rasterization processing stage of the 3D graphics pipeline, we did solid research on real-time and texture mapping technique. We implemented several methods on GPU in order to add realism to the 3D virtual scenes. And we also presented a new idea "general material library", which will give the graphics designers a lot of help.
