Passive acoustic localization has been widely used in the practice because of passive reception, good invisibility. Passive acoustic localization system formed by acoustic sensors has been used to detect the bearing and location of targets on the ground or in the sky.Firstly, acoustic target direction technical has been discussed. After comparison, cross-array, with four sensors symmetrically located in the same plane, has been regarded as the central array for target direction. Cross-array is the special form of round-array and could detect target bearing within o° ~ 360° in the plane and 0° ~ 90° in the sky. In addition, it is easily arranged and saves cost. Three typical bearing detection methods, Conventional Beamforming (CBF), Minimum Variance Distortionless Response (MVDR or Capon), Multiple Signal Classification(Music), have been posted in the paper. Each of them is a milestone in the history of spatial spectrum estimation. The results of the simulation show the rationality of cross-array, and the superiority of Music method. The other part of the thesis discusses the target location problem which includes targets on the ground and in the sky. As the single cross-array is too small to estimate the position, it's only used to detection bearings. In the thesis, three cross-arrays are used to form a triangle-array which is in big size. Cross-array is sub-array, and triangle-array is main-array. With the bearing results of sub-arrays, main-array confirms a point in the triangle enclosed by locating lines as the target position. The point is the iterative result for planar target, or the orthocenter of the enclosed triangle for tridimensional target. The results of the simulation prove the effectiveness of the compound array.
