With the widely communicating with outer world, machine translation from English to Chinese is bestowed on the great practical significance. Meanwhile, the research on machine translation will also puts forward the study on computational linguistics, natural language processing and artificial intelligence. Moreover, the study of machine translation is bestowed a very important significance on the collection of information.Machine translation(MT) is defined that the text is translated from a language to another language by computer. Since entering the 1990s, the methods of machine translation can be divided into two sorts: rationalism's rule-based method and empiricism's corpus-based method.The paper is based on project — Intelligent English-Chinese Machine Translation System. My main work is the accomplishing the modules of sentence converter and the generation of target language. The first part of this article presents the guideline of MT, and gives a broad overview of research in this area. Then, we describe the characteristics of English and Chinese and introduce the method of disambiguation. Next, we discuss in detail the design o f sentence converter and the generation. Last, the translation results are presented.Because the translation is a high intelligent process, we cann't acquire a satisfactory result by using any method alone. In this paper, we combine the traditional rule-based method and the empiricism's pattern-based method together. Based on the rule-based method, we introduce translation pattern and translate the source language sentences to the target language.In the pattern-based method, a new algorithm of calculating sentence similarity is presented. Based on DP matching algorithm, we design a structure matching algorithm and the matching rule of pattern. And a semantic similarity algorithm is presented. Meanwhile, in the rule-based method, we establish rule base to resolve the problem of word sense disambiguation and introduce the disambiguation mechanism of structure ambiguation. In the process of translating the sentences, we utilize the advantages of the two kinds of methods adequately.Last, the experiment result and the correlation of similarity threshold and translation result are described, and the translation error is analyzed in detail. The experiment shows that the score of translation quality is 87.5 and the accurate rate can reach 88%.
