In order to study the discharge characteristics of Shadow Mask-Plasma Display Panel (SM-PDP) cell, a software is programmed to simulate the discharge process according to the gas discharge mechanism and fluid simulation theory. In this paper, this software is upgrade to have the function of simulating the secondary electron emission in SM-PDP cells. With this new software we calculate the different mixture and the different components of them in the PDP cells. Through the study we get the voltage, the electric field and the density of particles information, which are all important to the discharge characteristics theoretically. In this paper, the secondary electron emission property of MgO is very important for the discharge process in a PDP cell. In order to introduce a more precise coefficient of the secondary electron emission in the simulation model of the novel SM-PDP, the secondary electron emission process on the MgO films is presented in this paper. The secondary electron emission coefficient () is calculated as a function of the energy of incident ions, which are noble gas ions. Different gas mixtures affect the secondary electron emission coefficient. Finally the proper relationship between and the field strength in the discharge cells is founded. The influence of on the discharge process in SM-PDP cell is calculated. At the same time, different structures of SM-PDP discharge cell are compared. The structure of discharge cell is very important to the focus of the ions as an electron lens. The trajectories of the ions and the field of the discharge cell are simulated. An optimized structure of the discharge cell is obtained.
