A concise theory of waveguide is first reviewed in this paper, and the amplification theory of er-doped glass waveguide is introduced.Gain characteristics of EDWA(Er-Doped Waveguide Amplifiers) in phosphate glass substrate have been investigated by solving numerically propagation equations and rate equations. Effects of Er-doped concentration, pump power and the length of waveguide on the gain of waveguide are discussed particularly.The foundamental principle of FD_BPM (Finite-Difference Beam Propagation Method) is used to simulate and calculate the process of beam propagation in er-doped glass waveguide. Then,the theory of boundary condition is carefully presented. The variety of the field is discussed comparing with the field added gain gene.The effects of pump power, Er-doped concentration on the field are discussed in detail.Through experimentation, some planar waveguides, channel waveguides and Y-splitters in different scales are fabricated in er-doped phosphate glass substrate. The mode refractive index of 632.8nm wavelength, which propagates in planar waveguides, is obtained by m line technology, and the superficial refractive index is calculated.The waveguide refractive index which is marked one is 1.5448 when the length is 5.0710um. The near figure for channel waveguide under 632.8nm and 1550nm waveguide is obtained, respectively. The figure between waveguide refractive index and length which is marked five is obtained also.The gain characteristic of Er-doped phosphate glass waveguide amplifiers fabricated is mearsured. Analyzing the signal spectrograms with 110mW pump power, results show that for an 1.70dBm signal gain is achievable for 3.18cm length EDWA's. At the end of this paper,some testing schemes are designed delicately and researched carefully.There are some parameters including the number of the mode,splitteing ratio,loss and gain needed to be tested.At the same time,any possible problems are anticipated and following settlements are also given.By all those researchs above the paper draws some valuable conclusions eventually.
