This paper is based on the implementation of EOS (Ethernet Over SDH) technology by using GFP (Generic Framing Procedure) .How to transmit high volume data effectively and economically on current SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) transmission network is an important research area in transmission technology. This paper first introduces the background of EOS. After making a comparison of the three popular encapsulating protocols, i.e. LAPS (Link Access Procedure SDH) , PPP (Point to Point Protocol) and GFP, it summarizes the benefits of GFP. Then it describes in detail the design scheme of transmitting Ethernet over SDH by GFP encapsulation in FPGA. After that, it describes the detailed design in Verilog HDL based on Altera's EDA tool Quartus II and FPGA (Cyclone). Finally, the test scheme is introduced and the results of test are listed and analyzed. The implementation is practically running on the transmission products CPE (Customer premises equipment) of UTStarcom Co. Ltd.The main merit of this paper is not only comparing and analyzing the three Ethernet encapsulating technologies but also implementing the low-cost-high-performance FPGA design which is running on real commercial communication systems.
