Since its establishment in1849, The French concession in Shanghai has g-radually developed into the biggest and the most prosperous one of the four F-rench concessions in China.(The other three are located in Guangzhou Tinajin, and Hankou.) This prosperity is embodied not only in economy, but also inculture. French newspapers kept appearing in the French concession in Shangh-ai. Le Journal de Shanghai was founded by Jean Fontenoy, a correspondent w-ith Agence Havas in1927, and was published continuously for18years till t-he end of WWII in1945. It is a precious source for the study of China aswell as Shanghai during Nanjing national government period and Anti-JapaneseWar period.Jean Fontenoy accepted the task given by Agence Havas in France and w-as sent to China, being in charge of founding a branch agency of Agence Ha-vas to expand the business in Chinese market. At that time, the French conce-ssion in Shanghai was in bad need of a newspaper for the French in Shanghai. There upon Le Journal de Shanghai was founded under the support of FrenchConsulate-General in Shanghai and French Chamber of Commerce. As a newspaper targeted the overseas Frenchmen, and focused on Far East,Le Journal de Shanghai has a very rich content. Later the newspaper becamemore and more influenced and had become a representative regional newspap-er. Its great contribution was mainly attributed to Jean Fontenoy’s careful culti-vation, who was a manager and editor-in-chief, at the beginning of founding.Meanwhile, he also had a two-year experience of corresponds in the Soviet Union. His thinking of the Soviet Union was speaded through the media of LeJournal de Shanghai to the overseas French in China.Based on historical materials, the paper conducts a study on Le Journal deShanghai under Jean Fontenoy’s management, and probes into controversial in-formation. In addition, it also shows quite a few reports about Shanghai andChina, hoping to complement the lack of study of the French newspapers inthe study of Newspapers in China modern history.
