Unlike existing domestic research, in this paper, the measurement of household division of labor can directly examine husband or wife's contribution to household labor compared with their spouses. We also include the relative position of household registration and housing property right. Based on the data of CHNS2006 and CGSS2006, we testified these three theories from Western countries:the time availability, the relative resources and ideology/gender role explanations. In this paper, the measurement of two different samples had produced the same results:the three theoretical perspectives were all had important impacts on the household labor allocation in China. This study also found inconsistencies with Western studies. The interpretation of the gender perspective is not always effective. The variables with the most explanatory power come from the relative resources, particularly the relative income. Economic contribution to the family directly affects the housework bargaining, resulting in differences in the division of household labor.
