Aesthetic comes forth with the establishment of human civilization. Since the ancient ages, people have never stopped their steps to pursue the beauty. In the same time, Aesthetic Education (AE) is developed with the history of people continuously pursuing the beauty. AE is the practice in which people apply aesthetic theory to beautifying both themselves and their environment. In principle, as a key part of human overall development, AE displays human's desire to develop and furthermore to surpass himself.With the rapid development of our society, it is urgent for our higher education to provide qualified and capable persons. In order to meet this increasing need, the further reform of our higher education has been recognized and put forward. During the process of this reform, the AE's specific function in training and educating the qualified and capable persons, is also bringing more and more attention. The study presented in this thesis, is intended to explore the essence, development as well as existing inadequacy of AE, and then give some suggestions about the current practice of AE in modern higher education.This thesis includes three chapters. Chapter I gives a general description for both the current viewpoints and arguments in the area of AE. By reviewing the previous and current studies from world-wide famous scholars, this chapter is intended to clarify the definition and principles of AE. Chapter II reviews the history and development of AE in our higher education, as well as the existing inadequacy of AE in current higher education. Due to such inadequacies as confusion in AE principles and difficulties in practices, some of our college students are inevitably weak or deficient in aesthetic judgment, which also reflects the significances of AE in our higher education. Chapter III presents the author's viewpoints and suggestions about the current reform of AE in higher education. Combined with the macro ideals of the concept of scientific development, the overall development for capable person, and harmonious society, which are proposed by our governments, this chapter explores and clarifies the specific connotations and objectives of AE, and then gives some suggestions for the practice of AE in current higher education from the aspects of education environment, teacher-student relationship, teaching process, course arrangement as well as aesthetic penetration.
