Since the introduction of reform and opening up, the social mobility and culture shock go along with the development of economy in China, which result in a more open social concept and above all, the fundamental changes in the family structure. Big families change into nuclear families gradually and the number of single-parent families is increasing, which produce more and more children with only one parent. Due to incompleteness of family, they may be affected in many aspects in the process of growth, including psychological emotion, character, behavior, learning ability, and so on.The thesis is a study of the influence of single-parent families on children in five aspects, including parent-child relationship, peer relationship, psychological emotion, personality and the learning ability, from the perspective of socialization. What’s more, the thesis also wants to find the difference between children of complete families from those of single-parent families in their socialization. Through the analysis, this paper argues that the gender difference between the parent and the child will affect the social performance of the single-parent children. Other influencing factors include parents’educational level, the living environment, etc. Comparing the socialization of children from complete families and those from single-parent families, the paper found that there is no significant difference between them, but the children in single-parent families are more likely to have problems. Therefore, this paper holds that in order to reduce the negative effects on the socialization of children from single-parent families to a minimum, three measures should be taken. First, the single-parent should pay close attention to children’s reaction, satisfy their need for love and belonging and set a good example for their children. Second, the school should try their best to establish a good relationship between single-parent students and teachers and classmates. Third, Society should try to eliminate the prejudice against a single-parent family and provide support to the single-parent children. The influence of family structure on children’s socialization is limited, and will be weakened gradually as they grow.
