Competition is the inevitable outcome of the market economy. No matter in the Western developed countries, which have already established a mature market economy system, or in China that is still constructing a socialist market economy system, competition from various fields is now becoming intensified. The study on the theory of competitiveness started to take place only recently, but the prospect of its development is promising. There have appeared studies of various types of competitiveness, such as studies on competitiveness of a country, an industry, a city or an enterprise, etc.With tourism becoming the biggest industry around the world, the relative studies on competitions in tourist trade have gained much attention and emphasis at home and abroad. The tourism destinations are the most important constituent of competitions in tourist trade. With their importance in national and regional tourist development keeping increasing, the cities have now become the most important tourism destination. In China, the port cities of the coastal areas are the most important destinations of tourism. To enhance the competitiveness of these cities' tourist trade is of significant importance for strengthening the competitiveness of Chinese tourism in the world tourist market.The thesis consists of totally five chapters. The first chapter is introduction, which aims at explaining the reasons for selecting the subject, the significance of the study, and the framework of this thesis. This chapter also includes a brief survey of the relative studies at home and abroad. And the author proposes in this chapter that it is necessary and important to investigate how to improve the competitiveness of the destination of tourism.The second chapter deals with the theoretical basis of the study. In this chapter, the author mainly explains and interprets those relative concepts and theories about the studies on how to improve the competitiveness of the destination of tourism. Such concepts and theories include the competitiveness, the competitiveness of the tourist industry, tourism destination and the tourism destination competitiveness, etc. Besides this, according to differences between formation, development as well as influencing factors, the author divides the destination of tourism into three types: destination in construction, destination in development and destination in maturity. And there are different measures fordestinations in different developing stages to improve their competitiveness: the destination in construction should be good at employing its own advantages; the destination in development should employ fully its comparative advantages and the destination in maturity should try to establish its competitive advantages.The third chapter deals with the problem of adopting the appropriate approach of improving the competitiveness of the tourism destination. The author carries out interpretations from three aspects. They are respectively the strategy and policy employed in cultivating and enhancing the development of the competitiveness of the destination, and the selection of appropriate approach in maintaining the sustainable development of competitiveness of the destination. Firstly, detailed analysis is made upon the method of SWOT employed in developing the comparative advantages of the destination and "diamond model" employed in creating the competitive advantages of the destination. Then after an analysis of the relationship between government and market in the system of market economy, the author points out that in China the ideal policy adopted in cultivating and enhancing the competitiveness of the destination is that the government must play a leading role. And in the end of this chapter, the author further points out that to maintain the sustainable development of the competitiveness of the destination tourism, efforts from three aspects, respectively the quality management of the destination, the quantity management of the destination and regional improvement, need to be made.Chapter four is a case s...
