A Study On The Status Of Tibetan Women In Deqin County, Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province

Since the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the Chinese women have acquired a complete liberation, and the status of the Chinese women has changed radically, and the women of ethnic minorities have gradually cast off the feudalism oppression and become "half of the sky" of the society. Particularly, since the opening-up and reform was started and along with the rapid development of regional economies, the improvement of the social system, the constant development of science and technology, and the strategic attention paid by the state to the issues of women of ethnic minorities, the status of the women of ethnic minorities has improved greatly and they have been playing a role of ever growing importance.Based on the Marxist theories of women’s liberation and equality of nationalities, the present paper performs an in-depth analysis of the current status of the Tibetan women of the Deqin County of the Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, by way of theoretical research and field surveys (e.g. interviews, questionnaires, statistical analysis, etc.). The present paper holds that the political, economic, cultural and family status of the Tibetan women in the Deqin County has been improved significantly as compared to the situation before the founding of the People’s Republic of China.According to the findings of the present paper, more and more Tibetan women have stepped out of their households and entered into the society, and are playing an important role in the state’s political, economic and cultural fields. However, because of the influence and constraint of insufficient publicity of the concerned policies, imperfect environment in terms of economic development, the relatively low level of education, and the relative backwardness of the mentality vis-a-vis marriage and family, some Tibetan women in the Deqin County still face challenges of relatively low awareness regarding political and economic participation, low level of education, and weak status in marriage and family.In order to further enhance the social status of the Tibetan women, boost the regional social and economic development, and consolidate the harmonies among different nationalities in the Deqin County, the author of the present paper puts forward the following recommendations:First, to promote a more equal political environment so that the political status of the Tibetan women can be further improved; second, to promote a more enabling environment so that the economic participation of the Tibetan women can be increased; third, to develop a better educational environment so that the educational level of the Tibetan women can be further improved; and fourth, to foster a more harmonious marriage and family environment so that the Tibetan women can enjoy more independence in matters related to marriage and family.In a nutshell, the author of the present paper hopes that with the proper enforcement and implementation of the concerned policies and measures, the political, economic, cultural and family status of the Tibetan women can be further enhanced comprehensively so that they can play a bigger and better role in the social and economic development.
