This thesis is focused on the internal pitch organization, voice-leading, tonal structure, and contrapuntal technique of Robert Schumann's E flat Piano Quintet. The author is trying to explore not only the thematic and harmonic connections in the surface but also tonal structure and motivic connections hidden in deeper levels. The purpose is to draw a logical picture out of some complicated harmonic, contrapuntal, and formal structures. The thesis is made of four chapters: chapter one is on the harmonic and melodic motions of the first and second theme; chapter two, harmonic motion, pitch structure, and tonal structure; chapter three, the thematic and motivic organizations on the surface and deeper levels as well; chapter four, contrapuntal skills in this work. |
