As one of the most important writers in German literature of the 20th century, Hermann Hesse has won wide popularity all over the world because of the style and philosophy in his books. During the last few decades there has been consistent research about him from different cultures. This paper finds its starting point in the "rove"-motif that repeatedly appears in Hesse's works; then it tries to analyze several books of the author, in order to find out the different forms of this motif. Through this one can also get an understanding of the historical situation at that time. Also one should pay attention to the fact that on all these creatures there are specific traces of the author. They use all kinds of means to protect their individuality and refuse to compromise with the conventional world. Generally speaking, they can only exist as individual personals; they cannot, and would not like to rebel against the whole social system, therefore they choose to "rove" away and be the "outsiders". In Hesse's early works the wanderers often have to suffer from the misery by roving alone while in the later ones they begin to face this situatione and try to find the way out.
