Diabetic peripheral neuropathy(DPN) was named in many ways .Basing on its syndrome,in ancient books it was named as anaesthesia syndrome, numbness syndrome, arthralgia syndrome, flaccidity syndrome and Xiaoke with arthralgia syndrome and flaccidity syndrome. The long process of Xiaoke, insufficient natural endowment, the damage of spleen and stomach for diet reasons, emotional imbalance make important sence in the formation of DPN. Its basic pathogenesis was root deficiency and branch excess.Root deficiency means that the deficiency of YIN and Yang, insufficiency of Qi and Blood, and the deficiency of the spleen, liver, and kidney. Branch excess means the mechanism that obstruction of collaterals byblood stasis, phlegm turbid retention, phlegm and blood stasis, endogenous wind invade collaterals, pathogenic Qi stagnation. Nerve system is similar to collaterals in its morphology and function. For this,DPN can be concluded into one kind of collateral disease. Furtherly, the damage of collaterals and blood stasis are the coexistting pathogenesis of DPN.And deficiency of both Qi and Yin is the main pathogenesis of the damage in early stage. The decreace in genes expression of neurotrophic factor,Na+-K+-ATPase activity, the elevation of MBP in blood serum are the pathological basis of the damage of collaterals.
