In this study, the mode of thinking used in Huangdi Neijing will be examined.Space and time is a pair of basic attributes that any being has.In the course of cognition, however, human cannot know a being simultaneously from the spatial and the temporal perspectives. To grasp the time attribute of a being, time must not be disturbed and thus space of that being would be constantly in change in respect of time;to grasp the space attribute of a being, time must be frozen so as to allow space to be abstracted from. For the above reasons,it emerges two fundamental modes of thinking, namely yixiang thinking and abstract thinking, which has been exercising respectively by the traditional Chinese and the contemporary Westerner. From the revisit of the cultural and philosophical atmosphere the authors of Huangdi Neijing were in,it is found that these authors must have been influenced by yixiang thinking and the great culture that built upon it.To verify this, the text of Huangdi Neijing is examined in detail.Judging from the way Chinese pictographs were used and the detailed depiction of human organ and tissue, authors of Huangdi Neijing has been thought to be knowledgeable about human anatomy. However, they did not go further from here, but shifted their attention to motions. With no exception, every motion links to other motions. When observing things or beings in motion,we discovered physical objects and non-physical objects.Physical properties of a being can only be realized when that being is not in motion while non-physical properties of a being can only be realized when that being remains in motion.Inside human body, the combined motion of physical and non-physical objects manifests(a) as functions like viscera,(b) as information like meridians,or(c) as states like qixuejinye. In other words, viscera, meridians and qixuejinye only exist in patterned motion, for only patterned motion can bring about an entity or a being. As for human being,it is brought about by the patterned motion of qixue.Patterned motions of qixue manifest as human physiological phenomena or symtoms. Through yixiang thinking, one can observe these phenomena or symtoms and realize that there is a momentum representing the composite patterned motions of qixue. To a certain extent of a situation, momentum is regarded as a norm, and whatever interfering the norm is regarded as a variation. As long as the variation has not caused any irreversible change of the norm, the norm presides over the situation. This type of norm-variation relationship is a commonplace in human body.If healthy growth is a norm, then any disorder of human body would be a variation. If balance of yi-yang in human body is a norm, then difference in physique and disposition would be a variation. If disorder of human body is a norm, then any secondary associated symptom would be a variation. If orderly seasonal change is a norm, then any disorderly climatic change would be a variation, which is usually a common cause of human illness. Each norm-variation relationship only presides over a situation to a certain extent. In summary, all theories in Huangdi Neijing aim to explain the patterned motions of qixue in human body, and momentum is the essence. The text employs momentum and norm-variation relationships to guide diagnosis, treatment and how to live a healthy life. Above all,all theories in the text are products of yixiang thinking.Nowadays, abstract thinking is the leading mode of thinking in almost all aspects of researches. Not surprisingly,so is abstract thinking in research about Chinese medicine. But that did not bring any great leap in the field because applying abstract thinking on theories which are derived from yixiang thinking simply did not work compatibly. Therefore, opening the research up to areas of yixiang thinking becomes imminent.Such areas include researches on theoretic foundation of yixiang thinking and its application in Huangdi Neijing.
