Objective:To measure the level of serum folic acid (FA) and homocysteine (HCY) of medium stage pregnant women who were high risk by prenatal screening and abnormal fetus by prenatal diagnosis and who were high risk by prenatal screening but normal fetus by prenatal diagnosis and who were low risk by prenatal screening and normal fetus such as CHD,NTD,CL by brightness mode ultrasonic examination (some by color ultrasonic examination ) , to study the correlation between serum FA and HCY with birth defects and the value in prenatal diagnosis .Methods:19 pregnant women who were high risk by prenatal screening and abnormal fetus by prenatal diagnosis were selected as group A, with another 60 pregnant women who were high risk but normal fetus as group B and another 26 pregnant women who were low risk as control. The concentration of serum FA was measured by using the 1235 automatic immunoassay system ?, the concentration of serum HCY was measured by using the method of chemiluminescent immunoassay, Spss 13.0 for windows were applied for statistical analysis.Results:1.The mean serum FA were 18.90±5.65nmol/l and 25.40±8.06nmol/l and 36.46±11.27nmol/l in group A and B and control group respectively, There were significant correlation in the three groups (P<0.01) .2.The mean serum HCY were 19.62±6.01umol/l and 15.78±2.29umol/l and 13.05±2.10umol/l in group A and B and control group respectively, There were significant correlation in three groups (P<0.01) .3.Statistical analysis was done to show a negative correlation between serum FA and HCY in group A and B and control group (P<0.05 ) .Conclusion:1.The mean serum FA level was significant decreased in group A compared to that in group B and control group, indicating that there was a important association between serum FA and birth defects.2.The mean serum HCY level was significant increased in group A compared to that in group B and control group, indicating that serum HCY was one of the main risk factor of birth defects.3.A negative correlation in group A and B and control group showed that serum FA was closely related to serum HCY.4.The low level of serum FA and/or the high level of serum Hcy can be one of the important symbols of prenatal diagnosis of the pregnant women who were high risk by prenatal screening...
