Cyclophosphamide, abbreviated to CP, is an alkylating agent with antitumor effect, which is commonly used in clinic at present. Its curative effect is wide, effective to different kinds of tumors, especially effective to malignant Lymphoma. However, its selectivity is not strong enough. When it kills the tumor cells, it also damages the normal tissue cells, especially those vigorous blood cells and lymphocytes leading to many toxic actions. Tonic formulae of Chinese medicine have been applied widely in Tumor Treatment. It can treat the precancerous lesions and prevent the tumorigenesis. If Chinese medicine is combined with operation, teletherapy and chemotherapy, the effect will be better. It also can prevent tumors from recurring and transferring. The toxic actions of teletherapy and chemotherapy can be alleviated. When treating tumor in metaphase or anaphase, it can improve the symptom, increase the quality of existence, and prolong the living time with tumors in vivo. The investigative aim of this article is about how Tonic Formulae protects the body to decrease the series of CP' s toxic side effects. Here, five typical prescriptions are studied from different aspects (marrow hematogenic system , immune system and antioxidant molecules) and different levels (tissue, cell, protein and gene levels). The possible mechanism of the tonic formulae is indicated by the research as following:1. The DNA and Chromosome damage of Marrow cells caused by CP is relieved, inhibition on marrow cells proliferation by CP are enhanced, and CP' s restriction towards. In this way, enough mature marrow cells can flow into the blood circulation to antagonise CP' s inhibition on marrow hematogenic system by CP and maintain normal functions. 2 The apoptosis of thymocytes and splenic cells caused by CP is decreased, the damage of spleen CP is lowered, and inhibition on thymocyte...
