Objective: To investigate the epidemiology of systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) or sepsis and their relationship with severity and prognosis of patients with decompensated cirrhosis and severe chronic hepatitis.Methods: According to diagnostic criteria of SIRS, all 262 severe hepatitis patients were divided into two groups: SIRS group (n = 152) and non-SIRS group (n = 110). Clinical data including function of primary organs, incidence of complications and prognosis of the disease were studied retrospectively.Results: The incidence of SIRS or sepsis were 58.0% and the primary precipitant were infection (71.1%) and gastrointestinal hemorrage (19.7%). The morbility of hepatoencephalopathy (HE) and hepatorenal syndrome (HRS) were higher statistically in SIRS patients than in non-SIRS patients. There was no significant difference in aetiology of liver failure between those two groups.
