According to the theory of phlegm syndrome in TCM, and combining with formerly documents and clinical practice, We deduce that phlegm syndrome is closely related with the oxygen free radicals. To explore the essence of physiology and pathology of phlegm syndrome and senile, We observed different effects of dispersing phlegm, removing blood stasis, tonifying the kidney on the content of plasma total antioxidant capacity, plasma lipid peroxides, monoamine transmitters in hypothalamus and super miniature structure of thymus cell of aging model induced by D-galactose. The results show: three prescription all can postpone senile, reduce the production of plasma lipid peroxides, increase total antioxidant capacity and improve thymus cell structure. The prescription of dispersing phlegm is instinctually better than the other two prescription of removing blood stasis and tonif~ing the kidney. But for monoamine transmitters in hypothalamus, it did not show any effects. It seems that phlegm syndrome is closely relative to oxygen free radical, The prescription of dispersing phlegm can reduce lipid deposition and cell damage of the reaction of lipid peroxides, eliminate free radical and aging production promptly . So that it can postpone senile. This is significant to prevent or to treat aging diseases.
