Nonverbal communication is very important for human communication. It often determines whether human interaction can be achieved successfully or not. However, currently the domestic studies on nonverbal communication mainly focus on the level of intercultural communication. The discussions on the relationship between nonverbal communication and EFL teaching are not systematic. And as a result, many teachers and students are not fully aware of the function and status of nonverbal communication in EFL classroom. This thesis tries to make some preliminary investigations with the purpose of providing some enlightenment to EFL teaching. This study used two questionnaires about significance of teachers'nonverbal behaviors separately for teachers and students. In addition, the author conducted a test involving 26 teachers about the teaching result evaluation. The results indicate that nonverbal communication does promote students'learning interest, learning motivation and their attentiveness in EFL class. The body language of teachers'nonverbal behavior has effects on the students'learning process as visual cues, and the vocalics as auditory cues. In turn, they can affect the students'emotion and motivation. The classrooms with the teacher employing a lot of effective nonverbal interactions are more active and lively than those with a few nonverbal interactions. The study also shows that teachers'nonverbal behavior is highly correlated with the teaching result. We should fully value teachers'nonverbal behavior to ensure that every teacher employs appropriate and effective nonverbal behaviors in class so as to improve the efficiency of English classes. |
