Objective: Learn the occupational stress and mental health characteristics of operating room (OR)nurses in Large General 3A-level Hospitals.Understand the relationship between occupational stress ,social support, coping styles and the physical and mental health. Provide the basis for effective management of occupational stress .Method: Investigate 280 operating room nurses of four Large General Hospitals by cluster sampling method.Use general demographic questionnaire,Nurses Working Pressure Questionnaire, Coping Style Questionnaire , Social Support Rating Scale , and SCL - 90 questionnaire to investigate work stress, social support, and mental health states related to operating room nurses.Descriptive statistics methods,analysis of variance,correlation analysis of statistical methods and regression analysis were used to make a discussing of work stress, social support, and mental health states .Results: (1) Workload and nursing speciality were the major aspects of the highest scores. On nursing speciality: Male obtained higher scores than female (P<0.01)and the contract nurses obtained higher scores than nurse practitioners (P<0.05); On workload and working environment dimensions: Nurses with 1-5 years experience of nursing work obtained lower scores than those of 11-20 years and more than 20 years nurses (P<0.05); Nurses obtained lower scores than senior and supervisor nurses (P<0.05). (2) Most of the OR nurses chose"solve the problem"and"seek help"as primary ways to deal with work pressure; Nurses more than 40 years old were more aptitudinal to choose"rationalization"as a way to deal with work pressure (P<0.05); Supervisor nurses obtained higer scores on"rationalization"than nurses (P<0.05). (3) OR nurses obtained higher scores on"subjective support"and"social support availability"; The contract nurses obtained higher scores than nurse practitioners on"social support"and"subjective support"(P<0.05) ;Nurses who was belonged to"20-"age group gained lower scores on"social support"and"social support availability"than other age groups (P<0.05). (4) OR nurses physical and mental health state were better than norms (P<0.01). (5)"Self-accusation","fantasy","rationalization"and"withdraws"were ways positively correlated with work pressure, on the contrary,"handle with problem"was the way negatively correlated with work pressure (P<0.05);"Objective support"was negatively correlated with work pressure (P<0.05);"handle with problem"and "seek help" were negatively correlated with mental health (P<0.05);"Self-accusation","fantasy","rationalization"and"withdraws"were negatively factors correlated with mental health (P < 0.05).Conclusion: OR nurses exist moderately occupational stress and good conditions of mental health. Nurses of different demographic characteristics exist different levels of working stress, social support, and mental health, etc. Work stress, social support, and mental health has a certain degree of correlation.
