Residential building is the basic type of architecture. It is the important carrier of the development in human society, economic and cultural. The study of housing has the important practical significance to improve people's living standard and to promote the development of society. Along with the improvement of people's living standard, the living demand of people is higher than before. In order to meet the living demand of people, we must pay more attention to architecture design. The study object in this paper is the rational thought of architecture design, that is, design process and design methodology.Firstly, after explaining the background of paper; many things introduced, including research purpose, research meaning and research method, definitions of relational concepts, the content, the actuality and level of study at home and abroad.Secondly, this paper introduced the development of residential building; analyzed living space and living behavior; explained relational influencing factors and design thought in design of living space.Finally, the article emphasized on studying design process and design methodology of residential building. Three kind of different design processes are contrasted, and then their advantages and shortcomings are analyzed. Based on the study of design process, the design methodology which used in every step is being studied: analyzed the methods of User Participation, Architecture Programming, Archiplanning, and Post Occupancy Evaluation. According to the difference of design process and design methodology, three kinds of dwelling houses are investigated. After analyzing their advantages and shortcomings, this paper concludes integrated design process and design methodology.
