The theory of slope stability and the severity of landslide are researched applying mechanical method after thorough analysis of the results of research performed in the field over decades. Achievements are made in the following three aspects:1. In view of the effects of rheological characteristics of soil, a mechanical model of progressive failure of slope is presented by generalizing the mothod of imbalance-thrust. The evolutional process of landslide can be clearly shown by computer simulation using the model, and the latter prove that the strength of soil on the whole slip surface bring impossibly into play at the same time.2. The optimality method are introduced on slope cutting project in the paper. The minimum erathwork of slope cutting is regarded as target function, and the anticipated factor of safety of slope as a constraint condition, so this problem is equivalent to optimality one with constraint conditions. Thus the optimal scheme of slope cutting can be obtained.3. Based on analysis of the dynamical mechanism of high-speed long-distance landslide, the kinematic block model of long run-out orediction for these landslides is improved, where the critical state of landslide is regarded as initial state. It is possible, applying the model, to simulate the whole advancing procedure of soil mass from the onset of landslide, to predict the advancing speed of the soil mass and the damage area of the landslide. The efficiency of the procedure is illustrated by comparison of the in situ data with those calculated using the model.
