The processing improvement of tight-lock coupler body has been investigated. Tight-lock coupler is one of the key components of train buffer equipments. However, its structure is complicated and its material, the grade E steel, is typically difficult-to-machine. Cutting of grade E steel often yields serious "sticky knife" phenomenon, aggrated abrasion of cutting tools, weak workpiece accuracy and low production efficiencyg, etc. Grade E steel, i.e., the material of tight-lock coupler body, is the research object of this thesis. At first, suitable cutting tools and Cutting parameters are selected through extensive simulation and practical experiments conducted with diffirent cutting tools. Then more reasonable and optimized process of tight-lock coupler body was obtained by taking into account production practice.Main research contents are listed as follows:(1) Present study on the tight-lock coupler processing at home and abroad has been reviewed in detail. And the feasibility of the corresponding problem has been analyzed with the consideration of practical situation.(2) The cutting mechanism of the Tight-lock coupler grade E steel has been comprehensively studied through simulations and practical evaluation with Deform-3D, the finite element analysis software, and central composite design. The cutting performance of the cutting tools and materials has been mainly evaluated from the perspectives of cutting force, cutting temperature, chip morphology and surface roughness.(3) Taking the surface roughness as the main object of research on surface quality, and the influence of cutting parameters on it has been analyzed. The regression models of the surface roughness and cutting parameters have also been obtained with quadratic regression.(4) From the perspectives of the single factor, the marginal effects of factors and the factor interaction, the surface roughness prediction model has been analyzed with MATLAB, and to the key affecting factors have been obtained. And the optimal parameters of cutting process have been filtered by optimizing the cutting parameters.(5) According to the simulation and experimental results and practical production, a solution to improve the process of tight-lock coupler body has been proposed. Practical production justifies our solution and shows that it meets the requirement, improves the quality of products, boosts the effiecy, and decreases the cost.
