Based on the comparative analysis of the current advanced domestic and foreign sewage reuse technology, the paper selects SBR to treat every kind of building sewage and obtains the optimal reuse process parameter. From the experiment, a new technology- ICAST (Intermittent or Cyclic Activated Sludge Technology), used for residential quarter's domestic sewage reuse treatment, is proposed, and a pilot system of ICAST is installed. The ICAST system is made up of sewage collecting system, sewage reuse treatment system, reclaimed water system, secondary pollution management system and automatic control and monitoring system. The secondary pollution management system includes odor, noise and sludge treatment system.The pilot experiment shows that the ICAST can achieve high efficiency under the load of 0.05~0.5kgCOD/kgMLSS·d. In this case, the removal efficiency of CODcr, BOD5, NH3-N and turbidity can be above 91.7%,90.2%,81.5%,91.4%, and the effluent can meet the national water reusing standard. Through the secondary management experiment and the toxicity and secure appraisal experiment on reclaimed water, it proves that no pollution is engendered during the production of reclaimed water, and the water is safe for non-toxic, no sensitizing and no effect on heal of the wound skin. By the long-term microscopy, it shows that microorganisms'and protozoa's shape and properties can be indicator as the economical and effective operation of the system.Based on the above achievement, ICAST system is demonstrated successfully at ecological building's wastewater reuse treatment in Xinzhuang technical garden, the branch of Shanghai Research Institute of Building Sciences. By conducting the economical analyses on demonstration project, it can be concluded that the appropriate construction scale for residential quarter's domestic sewage reuse treatment is above 50,000 square meters area of structure. But considering the aspects of treatment scale, land occupancy of underground processing room and the convenience of maintenance and management, 80,000 square meters area of structure should be much better. It with the average reclaimed water production cost lower than 1.0 RMB/t.In conclusion, the ICAST system, presents in this paper, can economically, effectively and stably remove the pollutants in wastewater. The effluent can well meet the national water reuse standard. So, with the advantages of simple process, easy management, low cost of construction and production, ICAST is ideal for residential quarter's domestic sewage reuse treatment. At the end, a rational proposal of related measures for Shanghai to generalize the residential quarter's domestic sewage reuse treatment is proposed.
