As concerning the high toxicity of organotin paints, the need to develop new environment-friendly antifouling paints has been highlighted. The tin-free acrylic polymers used play a very significant role in the processing and end-use behaviour of the antifouling paints.Ceratinamine, pseudoceratidine, tribromogramine(TBG) are natural products used as a structurally diverse class of metabolites embodying a broad spectrum of interesting biological activities. Many indole analogs (e.g. tribromogramine) have been found to be cytotoxic, as well as antibacterial and antifouling. In this paper, acrylamide monomers, uniquely functionalized antifoulants, are designed and synthesized, and also used to prepare copper acrylic copolymers.as co-monomers.A series of novel indole derivatives:N-((1H-indol-3-yl)methyl)acrylamide(NIAM); N-((5-bromo-1H-indol-3-yl)methyl)acrylamide(NBIAM);N-((5,6-dichloro-1H-indol-3-yl)methyl)acrylamide(NCIAM);di(1H-indol-3-yl)methane(DIM);bis(5-bromo-1H-indol-3-yl)methane(BBIM);bis(5,6-dichloro-1H-indol-3-yl)methane(BCIM) has been successfully synthesized through Friedel-Crafts reaction. Thereinto NIAM, NBIAM and NCIAM are new-style monomer. All of them were testified by FTIR and 1H-NMR.Copper acrylic copolymers were synthesized by reaction of acrylic pre-polymers with copper hydroxy benzoate. In order to improve the resin's antifouling property, a new copper acrylic copolymer containing acrylamide moiety- NBIAM and NCIAM was synthesized successfully. It is the first time that NBIAM and NCIAM were introduced into the copper acrylic copolymer. Because of the introduction of organic acid and NBIAM and NCIAM, the copper acrylic copolymer shows excellent antifouling property. The paints prepared by using copper acrylic copolymers as binder resin showed good antifouling property after an exposure to marine environment.
