The water-soluble polymers with a low content of hydrophobic groups in the main chains are called hydrophobic associative water-soluble polymer. Their solution exhibits good properties due to the hydrophobic groups, such as : high effective viscosifying, shear thinning, thermo-& salt resistance and so on. But at present, the hydrophobic polymers mostly used are of bad water-solubility.In view of this problem, a series of water-soluble hydrophobic associative ternary copolymers have been synthesized in aqueous solution by redox initiation polymerization which are composed of AM as main monomer, AMPS as functional monomer importing sulfoacid-groups and JX-10 as hydrophobic monomer. At the same time, we had synthesized single and double polymers as contrast. We screen out the best reaction conditions by lots of experiments in the laboratory considering the costs and solubility.In our experiment, the relations between concentration, electrolyte, (NaCl and CaCl2), surfactant , different shear rate and the viscosity have been discussed. The results show that these hydrophobic associative ternary copolymers have good thermo-& salt resistance and suspension compared with the biliary copolymers thanks to the sulfoacid-groups. And because of the strong acid groups of AMPS, the copolymers present good water-solubility. In surfactant- solution, these solutions also show relating effective viscosifying. Besides these, they have good properties of shear thinning and recoverability. All of these facts directly make clear the existence of association and its reversibility, and indirectly verify the existence of the networks in solution.In the end, owing to the particularly capability, the feasibilities of these polymers in drilling fluid and slurry have been discussed. It can be forecast that these hydrophobic associative polymers will have a good future in many fields.
