The diethyl malonate was synthesized by carbonylation of ethyl chloroacetate catalyzed by Na[Co(CO)4], formed in situ from cobalt chloride, carbon monoxide, sodium dithionite and zine powder under mild conditions. The optimum conditions of formation of catalyst and the carbonylation were obtained by the experiments of the Vertical Crossing Scheme. The optimum conditions of the reaction process are (1) Preparation of catalyst T=70 ,Pco=2.0MPa,CoCl2 6H2O:Na2S2O4:Zn=1:2:1.33(mol),absolute ethanol 20ml,reaction time 1h (2) Synthesis of diethyl malonate T=60 , Pco=3.0Mpa,catalyzer:substrate=1:20,reaction time 3h.The conversion of ethyl chloroacetate is beyond to 70% and the selectivity to diethyl malonate above 90%. When we prolong the time of preparation of catalyst to 5h and the time of carbonylation to 8h,the conversion of ethyl chloroacetate can reach up to 90% and the selectivity to diethyl malonate can reach up to 99%, respectively under the selected conditions. This is a clean and promoted method for the production of diethyl malonate.
