In modern times, the port is a window and bridge opening up to the outside world for a country or region. It plays a very important role in urban and regional economic development. Along with China's rapid economic development and profound participation in international divisions, competition between ports is becoming white-hot. For port development, it is imperative to apply scientific management methods and carry out advanced administrating strategies. In view of this, the paper discusses the port's future development by the theory of strategic management, analyzes its strategic direction and proposes developing strategies based on the present situations of the port and its surrounded development. The paper first introduces relevant concepts and theories, illustrates specially importance of the strategic management in today's port development based on the port's specific function and characteristics, proposes methods and steps and elaborates the importance of port strategic management. Secondly, it makes an intensive study of the internal and external environments of container loading and unloading services within the port area from the actual development of the port itself, analyzes and proposes relevant developing strategies and implementing concepts for the port supported by the theoretical analysis of port strategic management. The paper typically stresses on the analysis of the port's strategic development environments by employing the Michael Porter's Five Forces Model and the Swot Analysis technology. This is vitally important to the future layout, infrastructure investment scopes, operating strategies, developing plans, and intensive and extensive integrated transportation arrangements of the Jiangyin port area.
