Since the adoption of the open and reform policy, the process of China's urbanization has been accelerated. However, the urban land utilization has been greatly influenced by the rapid urbanization due to the tight relationship between urbanization and land utilization. The effects of the rapid urbanization resulted in the out-of-control of land supply, imbalance of land structure and deterioration of ecosystems in China. Land resource is important and limited in China; it is not feasible to occupy agricultural land without control for the urbanization. Two aspects of food supply and urbanization are both important but controdictionary in land utilization. Therefore, it is vital to improve the land utilization efficiency during the rapid urbanization. The intensive urban land utilization might be an effective way to avoid the conflict of land for agricultural and urbanization utilization. Thus, the understanding of intensive land utilization is critical for the policy maker in the decision of the rapid urbanization of China. There are five chapters involved in this thesis. The first chapter is an introduction to discuss the background and significance of this research. The results related to this topic were reviewed and the study framework was proposed in this chapter.
